| | The Christmas Tree | | It is told that Saint Boniface, a monk from Crediton, Devonshire, England who established Christian churches in France and Germany in the 7th Century, one day came upon a group of pagans gathered around a big oak tree about to sacrifice a child to the god Thor. To stop the sacrifice and save the child's life Boniface felled the tree with one mighty blow of his fist. In its place grew a small fir tree. The saint told the pagan worshipers that the tiny fir was the Tree of Life and stood for the eternal life of Christ. It is also told that Saint Boniface used the triangular shape of the fir tree to describe the Holy Trinity of God the Father, Son and Holy Ghost. By the 12th Century, Christmas trees were hung from ceilings as a symbol of Christianity. However, in that time, for a reason no one could yet explain, the trees were hung upside down.Trees as symbols
Trees were a symbol of life long before Christianity. Ancient Egyptians brought green palm branches into their homes on the shortest day of the year in December as a symbol of life's triumph over death. Ancient Finns used sacred groves instead of temples. Romans adorned their homes with evergreens during Saturnalia, a...
| | your most unusual decorated tree | | What have you done outside of the usual Christmas tree decorations.I don't have the pictures accessable to me, they are on a hard drive from a different computer that I no longer have (kept the drive)One year I used all McDonald's Happy meal toys, and another year I used all of Beanie Babies, and the miniature beanie babies--it was great--my kids loved it.I'm not sure what I'm going to do this year with my cat as I'm sure she will be batting anything off that she can.so what do you do with a tree, and how do you decorate it.MoochPS Please include a picture if you can to share. | |
| | Christmas Decorations and Tree: should I bother? Help me decide! | | Usually I would be putting up my tree and decorations this coming weekend, as it is the first weekend in December. But when it comes to Twelfth Night and I have to take them down and pack them away - I hate it! It's not that I don't want to see them go - by January I am usually sick of the sight of them and longing to get back to normal! But it's such a hassle packing everything away - unwinding all the lights from the tree, carefully packing them away, taking down all the ornaments and packing them in bubblewrap. I just don't know if I can be bothered this year.I live alone and I have lots of family within walking distance - as they have children I usually spend most of the festive season at their homes. I don't expect anyone to come to me over Christmas - so why bother? I do like the tree and the lights in the evening, but after I get home from work there is so little time left to enjoy them. What do you think? Am I being incredibly miserable? Should I stop being a Scrooge and just get the tree up?! Or do you feel the same way? Will I regret not putting the decs up if I have an unexpected visitor? Can you help me decide? If not I will probably just stick it out -... | |
| | When do you take down your Christmas tree/decorations? | | I usually wait until the day after New Year's to start but it takes a few days to get everything organized and stored well. Are you someone who leaves lights up for weeks? I know when we lived in the North we had to wait for a nice weather day so it wasn't too windy that it was dangerous or too cold. | |
| | Is that a christmas tree skirt? | | My hubby and I were in a new store that opened. It was where the old roller rink was, so the store was huge, with tons of discounts and that's what I love.. Discounts! No longer than 20 minutes later my hubby and I were looking in one of the isles and I seen something really bright looking from the corner of my eye.
I had to take a second glance at it. When I looked I seen this really tall man with a zztop beard, and round glasses. He was wearing something around his shoulders that looked like it had some kind of christmas tree decorations on it, and it looked like it was made of somekind of felt material. It fit around him like a skirt.
On his head he was wearing what looked like a tall touque.
I had worked the night prior to that day and hadn't slept yet due to going to the city for an appointment my hubby had so I was running on no sleep, and at this point I was on my 5th wind probably, so I found a lot of things crazy and funny!
When I noticed this fellow, I couldn't help but laugh! I slowly lost control of myself and looked at my hubby to see if he noticed the same thing and by the way he looked back at me, he indeed did see this man.
My hubby asked me if that guy was...
| | Christmas Tree Lighting @ the National Harbor | | We went to the Christmas Tree Lighting @ the National Harbor here in Washington DC. We were there earlier than the said time cause we don't want the hassle of traffic jams going there or finding that we have to look for parking spot for a long period of time. I guess most of the people are thinking of the same thing coz when we arrived at the National Harbor, there is a little bit of traffic jam already and a long line for parking spaces. It's a good thing that they have big spaces for parking so even if there is a long line, there is enough space for everyone. We arrived there with an hour and a half to spare so we were able to go around the harbor. Considerig that they have just started its construction about a year ago, it is almost done already. The place is just awesome.
The program started on time. There was a group who played Christmas song while we were waiting for the lighting itself. When it was time to light the tree, they turned off all the lights within the area. Although there was a technical difficulty for a few seconds, the lighting of the tree proceeded without further problems. It was spectacular. The tree is 60 feet tall with a 6 feet star on top. There were...
| | Homemade Christmas Tree | | A friend just mentioned how she got a new tree this year and that reminded me of the tree my husband made us.We had an artificial tree where the holes had worn out and we couldn't put the branches in..So my husband found an old tree that we have growing everywhere around here that was starting to die and cut it down. It wasn't very big, so he cut off all the branches leaving the trunk. Then he drilled holes for each branch and what is really cool about this is, we didn't have to use those circle branches you get with a fake tree to cover the "stick" because we have a real trunk, so it looks real..All we need is a pine spray and unless you actually touched the branch, you would think we had a real tree..[em]wub[/em]Then it gets even better, I took those circles and wrapped them around a hanger I shaped into a circle and then decorated that to make my own homemade wreath..[em]w00t[/em]So, instead of throwing it out, we reused it and made another decoration..Now that I read this, maybe I should have put this in my frugal interest...[em]confused[/em]Have you reused something for the holidays to make it last longer or to stretch out out to make more with what you... | |

| | Outdoor Shot | | I love seeing others trees from their front windows as I drive around during the holidays. SO I set my tree up near my large living room window for this purpose. Here is a shot of mine from outside when it is drak. I love the moisture on the interior windows in this shot as well. Where do you place your tree each year and why is that the spot you use each year?
