The coming year
So do you think the White Sox have what it takes to bring Chicago another championship in 2007? I think they should have had it this year but couldn't put it together at the same time. I am sure Ozzie won't let that happend 2 years in a row!
Howard wins NL MVP award
PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- Ryan Howard joked he may resort to stealing bases to cut down on his intentional walks next season. Despite seeing fewer pitches to hit down the stretch, Howard still managed to have an incredible season at the plate and became the second player voted Rookie of the Year and Most Valuable Player in consecutive years. Howard almost single-handedly thrust the Philadelphia Phillies into playoff contention after a midseason roster purge, and finished with a .313 average, 58 homers and 149 RBIs. The All-Star first baseman walked 108 times, including 33 intentional passes. He didn't go deep in the final nine games and walked 11 times in that span. "Being the competitor I am, you want to go out there and try to get hits," Howard said after beating out 2005 NL MVP Albert Pujols for the award Monday. "When teams take the bat out of your hands, it's a little tough, but that's when you hope the rest of your team can come in and pick you up." A soft-spoken big man with an even bigger swing, Howard's season defied convention. Babe Ruth, Willie Mays, Hank Aaron, Ted Williams and countless other Hall of Famers didn't have as many homers or RBIs...
Twins 1B Morneau edges Yankees SS Jeter for AL MVP
Derek Jeter barely lost the batting title to Joe Mauer. He also was nosed out for American League Most Valuable Player by Justin Morneau, another member of the Minnesota Twins. Morneau edged the superstar shortstop of the New York yankees by 14 points in balloting by the Baseball Writers' Association of America announced Tuesday. The 25-year-old Morneau is the youngest player to win the AL MVP since Frank Thomas won with the Chicago White Sox in 1993 and the first Twin to earn the honor since Rod Carew in 1977. A first baseman, Morneau hit .321 with 34 homers and 130 RBI - second most in the league and in franchise history - as the Twins won the American League Central Division title. "I never thought I'd be sitting here with this award," Morneau said at an afternoon news conference. "I was just lying there with the phone by my side all day hoping it would ring. The phone never left my side." The Twins heated up around the same time as Morneau. They were 25-33 and 11 1/2 games behind first-place Detroit on June 7. From there, the Twins went 71-33 as Morneau hit .362 with 23 homers and 92 RBI. Jeter put...
Former Orioles P Dobson dies in San Diego hospital
Pat Dobson, one of four 20-game winners for the American League champion Baltimore Orioles in 1971, died Thursday in a San Diego hospital. He was 64. Dobson had just completed his ninth season with the San Francisco Giants and his first as a special assistant to general manager Brian Sabean. "Pat's untimely death is a complete shock to the whole organization and me and it's hard for us to express our feelings right now," Sabean said. "We've all become so close through the years and we're going to miss him dearly. "Obviously, our concern is for (his wife) Kathe and their family, and on behalf of the Giants, I want to express our condolences. I can't put into words the impact Pat had on the Giants over the years." Dobson was 20-8 with a 2.90 ERA in 1971, his second of seven straight 10-win seasons. He was joined in that rotation by Hall of Famer Jim Palmer (20-9), Dave McNally (21-5) and Mike Cuellar (20-9). That squad and the 1920 Chicago White Sox are the only teams in major league history to post four 20-game winners. The righthander was 16-18 in 1972 - his only All-Star season - and was 19-15 for the New York Yankees in 1974. Dobson was 122-129 with...
Pat Dobson, former 20-game winner with Orioles, dies at 64
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- Pat Dobson was part of an illustrious pitching staff in Baltimore and a savvy scouting department with the San Francisco Giants, touching everyone from Earl Weaver to Brian Sabean along the way. Dobson, one of four starters to win 20 games for the Orioles in 1971, died suddenly Wednesday night in the San Diego area, the San Francisco Giants said Thursday. He was 64. Throwing big curveballs and telling hearty jokes, Dobson made many friends in baseball. This year, his ninth with the Giants, he was a special assistant to Sabean, the team's general manager. The club didn't immediately release details about the cause of death. But USA Today reported on its Web site that Dobson's wife, Kathe, said he died one day after being diagnosed with leukemia. "He made his life baseball," Weaver said, "and enjoyed every minute of it." Dobson went 20-8 with a 2.90 ERA for the AL champion Orioles in 1971, rounding out a famous rotation that also included Hall of Famer Jim Palmer (20-9), Dave McNally (21-5) and Mike Cuellar (20-9). The 1920 Chicago White Sox are the only other team in major league history to have four 20-game winners. "He's one...
Astros sign OF Carlos Lee, RHP Williams
- By keeping Carlos Lee in the state, the Houston Astros went a long way in addressing their biggest need. After finishing the 2006 season with the Texas Rangers, Lee signed a six-year, $100 million contract with the Astros on Friday. Houston had been searching for a power hitter to bolster an anemic offense that was last in the National League with a .255 average last season and has been among the worst in the league over the last three years. In addition to improving their lineup, the Astros also strengthened their starting rotation Friday, signing righthander Woody Williams to a two-year deal worth $12.5 million. "This is a historic day for our franchise," Astros general manager Tim Purpura said. "We succeeded in fulfilling two of our offseason objectives, obtaining a run-producing middle-of-the-order power hitter, and we bolstered our starting pitching staff." The Astros' lineup figures to receive a huge boost from the Lee, 30, who split 2006 between the Milwaukee Brewers and Rangers, batting a combined .300 with career highs of 37 homers and 116 RBI. He also stole a personal-best 19 bases and struck out just 65 times - the lowest total of his...
Being a Sports Fan Instead of a Sports Idiot
I have never understood some of the insane things that go on in various sporting events. The things fans do have never made much sense to me. Now, don’t get me wrong, I am all for having fun at a sporting event. I am a huge fan when it comes to things like football and baseball. I am a chicago Bears fan and a huge Chicago White Sox fan. I have a huge baseball cap collection featuring teams that aren’t even in my city. However, there are limits to everything.I remember back in the 90s when the “Tomahawk Chop” was all the rage back when the Braves were routinely in the World Series. There were some people who thought that this was offensive to American Indians. Of course this ignored the fact that the thing started with college football and the Florida State Seminole’s football team. I never thought it was offensive to anyone. I mean, this was baseball. If you are offended at something stupid at a baseball game then you have bigger problems than drunken fans chanting off key and waving their arms around. I didn’t like the Chop because I just thought it was stupid. What purpose did it serve? From what I understand a lot of...
